What You Can Get for the Money - Daybreak vs NYC

Recently on our family's weekend getaway to the big apple, we decided to ride the popular red double-decker bus around the city. While the other more 'normal' tourists were snapping pictures of John Lennon's Strawberry Fields memorial in Central Park, my focus was across the street on a brownstone for sale. I had my cell phone out pulling up the active listing on Trulia to check the price on a Central Park West townhome in New York. What can I say? I'm a real estate agent 24/7, even on vacation! It was really interesting to compare the value of homes in Daybreak Utah to Manhattan.

So here is our very first Daybreak Houses' edition of... 'What you can get for the money!'

New York City, New York ~ Luxury Townhouse in Manhattan

This turn of the century mansion is located on Central Park West. Similar to the townhome in Daybreak, this New York mansion is within walking distance to beautiful parks and lakes. As the street name indicates, it is just across the street from Central Park. This townhome has original details and the four story floor plan is great for entertaining guests.

Wow! Quite a difference in price for a townhome in Daybreak vs Manhattan! I realize we are comparing apples to oranges here because these properties are very different in size. So let's break it down into a price per square foot comparison:

Daybreak Townhome:  $107/sq ft
Manhattan Townhome: $1,990/sq ft

So as you can see, you can get A LOT more for your money by buying a home in Daybreak! Just to be fair though, let's look at one more option for housing in New York City since not everyone is in the market for a 10,000 square foot mansion home.

 In order to find something a little more affordable out in the concrete jungle, renting might be a better option. But even then, affordability can be an issue! The average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in Manhattan is $3100. The median income for those living in Manhattan is $45-60k. So that rent check can still put a strain on the monthly budget. In that case, maybe sharing an apartment with roommates is a good solution!

New York City, New York ~ Shared Room in Two Level Penthouse


This is a two level penthouse located in a 5 story walkup (no elevator) brownstone on Central Park West. Like the other homes we've looked it, this apartment boasts views of the Park, easy access to the lake and subway, two roof top decks for entertaining, and a dishwasher! The apartment features 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and shared kitchen/living space for all roommates.

 Since space is at a premium, the shared room has BUNK BEDS! Yep, you heard me right! So any guesses on the monthly price of the top bunk in this desirable Upper West Side apartment?

Rent: $800/month + Utilities

And believe it or not, that is actually a bargain for the Central Park West address.

New York is a beautiful city and one I love to visit often. But, Daybreak really is a great place to call home. There are so many great options for outdoor activities, community events, access to shopping, walk to TRAX station, and best of all great neighbors and an active community!
