Planting Season in Daybreak!
Growing up in the Sugarhouse area of Salt Lake City has a lot of similarities to living in Daybreak Utah, which is probably why I fell in love with Daybreak. There is so much charm and character in the houses, quaint neighborhood appeal, and community parks and neighborhood events. One of the big bonuses of buying a home in Daybreak, is that most of the homes have been built within the last ten years - this means less maintenance and more energy efficient systems, both great qualities for aesthetics and your budget.
Since I lived in a city during my childhood, on a smaller lot, we didn't have a lot of room for a large veggie garden. I always loved to plant flowers with my mom and we pretty consistently would grow tomatoes and zucchini each year, but that was about all we had room for.
I think many of you will agree with me, there is nothing more delicious than garden fresh fruit and vegetables. So when I first moved to South Jordan I found out about Bountiful Baskets, which is a community co-op garden that you pay to be a member of and then each week you pick up a basket full of fresh produce. I did this for several years and it was delicious but still not the same as walking outside to pick a ripe, warm tomato right off the vine.
One of the benefits available to Daybreak Residents is access to the community garden plots! There are several gardens located throughout the community so you can find one within walking distance to your home. They have garden boxes already built and ready for you to till and plant your very own garden. You are responsible to weed, water, and maintain the garden box, but the water is paid for by daybreak (a nice bonus!). Gardening is a great way to get the kids outside and involved in something that will teach them the value of work and responsibilities and also let them see how their hard work pays off as the garden grows throughout the summer. It really is a fun family activity and who can complain about being outside enjoying this gorgeous weather.
This past weekend I was able to help my boyfriend's family plant garden boxes at their home in West Jordan. They have a beautiful backyard with several fruit trees and two big garden boxes that were just waiting to be filled. It was so much fun to go to the nursery and pick out the fruits and veggies, even the kids got to choose a few that they wanted to plant. Then everyone pitched in to get the starts and seeds planted. It kept the kids occupied for a couple hours and they loved digging the holes, marking the plants and making sure they were watered. I'm looking forward to watching the garden grow and hopefully enjoying some of the yummy results later this summer and fall. You can even help get them involved making cute markers for the plants.
Here are is a picture of how our garden boxes turned out. So excited to try the crops we planted: a variety of tomatoes, hot peppers, bell peppers, squash, zucchini, carrots, cantaloupe, watermelon and strawberries. We found our starts at Okubo's Farms (2075 W Garden Lane, West Jordan) the prices were great and they still had a pretty good selection.
